Encaustics I – 2015
These are three works from an introduction to encaustics class at the Nevada Museum of Art.
Three techniques used were:
- Masking/stencils – creating a stencil from paper and brushing the heated wax onto the work and then peeling back the stencil once the wax cooled.
- Building up texture – brushing new wax over old wax before it had a chance to completely cool would cause pieces to catch and clump, gradually building up texture.
- Using a physical item to create volume – In this case, steel wool was used to create texture and volume within the wax.
Other elements used were metal stamping dies, creating marks with tools, and moving the wax with a heat gun.
