Encaustics III – 2015
This is work from a class about using encaustics as a medium to explore mapmaking at the Nevada Museum of Art. I chose to explore a map of the city of Cardiff, Wales. (12″ x 12″)
Techniques used were:
- Masking – using a copy of the city, I used several masks to layer up color in different areas.
- Scraping away layers – using various tools on the layers of wax, I was able to create different depths and to pull up colors from below to indicate the populated/not populated areas of the city, or the major roads and water.
- Tool marks – I added more texture to some of the outlying areas with free-hand tool marks.
